Northern Gem Pumpkins

This week we’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on the incredible Northern Gem Pumpkin, and with limited numbers available we were sure to snatch them all up! This variety of pumpkin is the perfect mix between a Jap and Butternut pumpkin and is grown between the months of May to November. With a smooth sweet taste and soft skin, the Northern Gem has a similar shape to the Jap pumpkin yet cuts as easily as the Butternut. Plus the Northern Gem’s have a small seed pod meaning you get more of their delicious flesh!

Pumpkins are a delicious and versatile vegetable. From a simple soup to scones and salads, it’s hard to go past these golden gems. Northern Gem’s come from Kenrose Farm in Ayr, Northern Queensland where farmer Ken Duncan has perfected this sweet variety. Ken has been in the industry for 40 years and has been developing and growing this variety for the past 25 years. His passion for his produce is hard to beat and he loves this variety for the creaminess it brings to pumpkin soups as well as its ability to keep its texture and shape after being roasted when paired with roast meats.

Did you know that although pumpkins taste delicious, they also hold incredible health benefits? This humble vegetable is low in carbohydrates, has no saturated fats or cholesterol and is one of the best sources of vitamin A, a key in maintaining healthy skin and good eyesight.

With limited numbers on our shelves this week make sure you head in store to grab your Northern Gem pumpkin!
